Looking In the Rearview

“Do not remember the former things, Or ponder the things of the past. “Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert. ~ Isaiah 43:18-19 AMP

If you are looking in the rear view mirror, you are doing one of 3 things: (a.) Fearing whatever demons are chasing you; (b.) Dwelling on past mistakes or failures; (c.) Or admiring yourself and present situation.  Either way, you cannot and will not move forward by looking at what is behind you!

If you are fearing whatever is chasing you, you have yet to activate your faith and let whatever devil in hell know that God is GREATER than any problem and His power surmounts and surpasses any perceived fear.  When you walk in that knowledge, is there anything to be afraid of?  What weapon can bring you harm?

If you are still dwelling on the past, forgive yourself because God already has!  We are human, we will fall short and make mistakes, but we do not have to stay there.  Mistakes are only building blocks to become better and stronger.  We fall so that we learn how to get back up.  The past is just that… the past.

If you are admiring yourself in the mirror, you have become stagnant and have shined a light on yourself that will dim.  Life is ever evolving and you have to as well.  Do not become too enamored or full of self.  Life has a way of humbling us all and when we become too fixated on current accolades and allure, we inevitably come crashing down in a horrific fashion.

It may seem cliché, but when you view life through your “windshield,” you realize how vast the possibilities become and how much road there is yet to travel.  Looking through the “rearview” only reveals a limited, close, and very small part of life.  Albeit important to know our history, learn from our past, none of us has to live in the days of old.  Each waking day is a new opportunity to travel to unknown places physically and metaphorically speaking.  Wherever we will allow our mind to travel, forward or in reverse, so will the rest of us, body, spirit, emotions, etc., follow.

And we can only see so far ahead. Looking ahead is exciting and adventurous, but even the keenest eye can only see so far in front of them.  The premise is to move forward, excited about what is ahead, but to enjoy the journey on the way.  Learn from the past and become stronger and wiser because of it.  Plan and be purposeful for the future, but do not rush it or be in haste.  The past is already done, the future will take care of itself, and the present provides its own roads to traverse.  Safe travels my friends!

“See, when you drive home today, you’ve got a big windshield on the front of your car. And you’ve got a little bitty rearview mirror.  And the reason the windshield is so large and the rearview mirror is so small is because what’s happened in your past is not near as important as what’s in your future.” ~ Joel Osteen

The past is like using your rear-view mirror in the car, it’s good to glance back and see how far you’ve come, but if you stare too long you’ll miss what’s right in front of you… ~ Unknown

Motivational Monday

BrotherWord - PastDwelling in the past will do nothing but keep you captured in yesterday.  There is nothing you can do about yesterday’s events but learn from them and move on.  What happened then was meant for that season in your life and unless you want to remain stuck, it is time to embrace a new season. Thankful Thursday!

BrotherWord-Thankful Thursday

Contentment does not mean settling or giving up.  It is about being appreciative and THANKFUL for the here and now.  It’s about finding peace with what you have and what you don’t have.  One of the biggest challenges in life is being satisfied with your present situation while striving for a greater future.  Don’t get bogged down with the what ifs, the could have been, or the when this or that happens, but instead relish in the moment and appreciate it for all it’s worth.  Right now is where you are meant to be and the peace you feel, the inner smile of gratitude, is God’s way of letting you know that just like yesterday took care of itself, so will tomorrow.  Be THANKFUL for today and find contentment in knowing that now is a great place to be.  Make it a mindset to grasp the moment and express THANKFULNESS in your current state.  The more we learn to seize every opportunity, the less we’ll feel we’ve let opportunities escape us – Carpe Diem!

Lose not yourself in a far off time, seize the moment that is thine. ~ Friedrich Schiller

Thankful Thursday!

BrotherWord - Thankful Thursdays!

Ever thought what if or if only I would have done this or that?  We all have had those moments when we wished we can turn back the hands of time and have a do-over, a Mulligan.  The thing with do-overs are that it doesn’t guarantee we’ll get the desired outcome.  Instead of dwelling on the past, wishing to do something over, be THANKFUL for today and all it offers.  Today gives us the opportunity to make all our wishes come true, because truth be told, all we have control over is the here and now.  Wouldn’t it be great to make today the best day it possibly can be?  Take advantage of all that today brings to the table and watch how prosperous today will become.  Be THANKFUL for the big and the small and everything in between.  When we appreciate the present (today), we see the value in yesterday (history), and are not only prepared, but have a joyful expectation for what tomorrow (mystery) will offer.  Practice being THANKFUL for where you are, what you have, and what you’ve gone through.  These are the building blocks for the mind and soul that gives peace and purpose.  It soothes, teaches, and prepares us for the next phase.  THANKFUL on purpose and with a purpose, today and everyday!

What are you THANKFUL for today?  Who can you share your THANKFULNESS with?  Can BrotherWord help you discover or re-discover being THANKFUL on purpose?  Send your THANKFUL expressions, questions, and thoughts to BrotherWord in the comment section or at BrotherWord34@gmail.com.

U, Me, and We – Past, Present, Future

U, Me, & We:Past, Present, & Future

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.” ~ Author Unknown

Heard a topic recently about “Recalculating Your Route” and it began me to think about what happens when history spoils the gift and ruins the mystery?  As creatures of habit and self-preservation, our first instinct is to gravitate to what is comfortable and protect ourselves at all costs, and in doing so, we may miss out on the most important and beautiful things in life.

So often we rely on what we have experienced and although it is wise to learn from our past, we forget to enjoy the “present” when we allow those lessons to stifle our future.  Pain is a great equalizer and reminder of what to do and not to do, but it can also be a paralyses.  It can leave you stuck in a rut and life passing you by, especially when it comes to relationships and love.
