Editorial: There has been a recent rash of horrifying incidents in which so-called leaders have used their misguided power and influence to manipulate, exploit, and tragically, kill the very members who look up to them, follow them, and depend on them to better their lives. The beginning of each year brings a fresh start, a sense of excitement, and a chance to reinvent and reinvigorate the mind, body, and soul. Very THANKFUL to see another year and I have no doubt this year will be greater than the last. What excites me most though, is the lessons learned, lived through, and overcome in 2013.
The Boston School Committee is voting on whether or not it will expand its already active program of dispensing free condoms to all 32 schools in its system. Already available in 19 high schools with on-campus health centers, students at Boston public high schools may be able to receive free condoms if they sit through a brief consultation on safe sex.
In light of the recent post Media Stunt or Reckless Responsibility, it’s intriguing to read the mire that continues to surround the Carter’s recent “vacation.” We never know how our actions may affect one or many, but when positioned to influence, that effect is far reaching and stirs emotions never imagined. Hip-Hop’s power couple, Jay-Z and Beyonce, have been creating a storm of controversy and conversation as of late. Starting with Beyonce’s out-of-left-field song Bow Down Bitch, the Carter’s have been the talk of the town. With the couple’s criticized and scrutinized trip to Cuba for their anniversary, one begins to wonder is this wanted attention or misguided career steps.
