It’s #FGF – Feel Good Friday – and this is the #GraduationEdition! #BrotherWord is giving you a double dose of the feel good. Each year hundreds of high school seniors prepare to walk the stage, receive their diplomas, and embark on a new phase of life. And as common as graduation ceremonies may seem, it is the bright futures and amazing individuals who we will continue to applaud and celebrate.
First up is Boston Latin High School senior, Phillip Sossou. Students are remembered for a myriad of reasons, some good, some bad, but there are certain students who carve out their own legacies, or in this case, draw them. Sossou wanted to make sure that each of his classmates was remembered and at the beginning of the year he began memorializing all 411 in charcoal portraits! His art teacher did not think it was possible but before the last day for the seniors, he displayed his beautiful portraits of all his classmates for the entire school to admire. A school marred earlier in the year by racial tensions, Phillip Sossou used his talents to mend the fences, bring all together, and leave a lasting smile. Watch the video to see more about this amazing #ClassOf2016 graduate.
Our next Feel Good Friday comes from senior Kevuntez King, a three-sport athlete who graduated with a 4.0 GPA and has already earned enough to pay for his entire college education! The senior from Memphis, TN., spent the last five years waking up at 3:45am to sell newspapers. His dedication proved more than fruitful as he has earned enough to pay for his entire college education. Aside from graduating with honors, King epitomizes what it means when drive and dedication result in the manifestation of of our dreams coming true and that is the message he expressed to all his classmates, “Just chase your dreams.” Already accepted into Tennessee State University, King is not resting on his laurels, but staying true to what got him to where he is now and beginning his college career this summer.
We applaud all the graduates of 2016. Never stop chasing your dreams, keep striving for greatness, and no matter what, believe in the impossible!
Have you ever had a certain vision or image in mind or a design or pattern in which you think things should happen or unfold only for it not to remotely resemble what you envisioned? It can be frustrating and deflating, but do not let the detour deter the dream!
The beauty of dreams are that they are organic, fluid, ever evolving, and just because they may start one way, it is not unusual for them to take an alternate route. What so many of us miss is the beauty and message discovered in the detour. A detour does not necessarily mean you have been knocked off course, but instead reveals another way in which to reach your destiny. A detour is not a dead end!
You may have a usual route you take daily to and from work. After awhile, your vehicle could pretty much drive itself home. It becomes bland, mundane, and unadventurous. But now there is construction or an accident and you have been detoured and forced to take an unfamiliar passage. Although this new direction is foreign, it yields its own perks. You get to see new parts of the city, come across new establishments, and because it is new, your every sense is titillated, soaking in the fresh and fascinating scenery.
Same with life. Sometimes in life we get knocked off course for one reason or another or without rhyme or rationale, the course simply changes. Do not let the detour deter the dream. Although the road you traverse my change, it is the journey that should be cherished. Destiny is not determined by where you start, so no matter where you start or which roads you travel, your destiny is married to your willingness to withstand and continue on no matter where the roads lead.
Enjoy the detours life present. They offer us all an opportunity to experience new things we may have otherwise missed, to see new outlooks, and to learn alternate ways to reach our destiny. Detours also shield us from harm and protect us from unknown mishaps. Our detours remind us to be patient and to soak in the journey, not overlooking or ignoring the paths we travel or taking for granted the experiences that help us to grow. Remember, the detour does not deter the dream; it develops the destiny!
“The most fulfilling adventures happen when you start your journey without knowing where you’re going, because only then are you free to experience the unexpected detours you’re meant to take.” ~ A.J. Darkholme
“I think that you have to believe in your destiny; that you will succeed. You will meet a lot of rejection and it is not always a straight path, there will be detours – so enjoy the view.” ~ Michael York
Part of reaching your destiny is understanding your detours.” ~ Tony Eavns
As the world witnessed yesterday, when preparation meets the promise, championship moments are birth! Malcolm Butler went from an unknown and undrafted free agent to Super Bowl XLIX hero. With one phenomenal play, Butler went from mediocrity to stardom. Many may think it was luck or just something that happened, but it is a great demonstration of how you when you properly prepare you are ready when the opportunity presents itself.
Moral of the story – you have to be ready whenever the chance presents itself. Life will give you a chance to become a star, but you have to be ready to take full advantage. Whatever it may be that you are seeking to accomplish, train, work, study, go above and beyond to assure that when the time comes, it is nothing new or that catches you off guard. Butler was able to make such a fantastic play because there was no hesitation. He had seen the formation before because he had studied the film; he was in position because he had put in the work; he was able to make the play because he had trained. What are you doing?
No one can predict when the moment will occur, but everyone can attest that they do not come often and when they do, if you are not ready to capitalize, you may have missed your best shot. Remember, a dream without a goal is just a wish and a vision without a plan is just a dream. You have to know where you are going and devise and work the plan to get there. Preparation is the cornerstone for progress and prosperity.
Before anything else, preparation is the key to success. ~ Alexander Graham Bell
Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation. ~ Robert H. Schuller
One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation. ~ Arthur Ashe
Talking about what you want out of life accomplishes very little. It is perfectly fine to speak those things as if they are, try to will them into existence, but the only way those words ever materialize is if they are followed by actual work. A wish is only as good as the potential, power, and perseverance it takes to turn that wish into reality.
Do not let the wish, the hope, the dream, be the beginning and end of what it is you are striving towards. One step forward can catapult that wish and begin the momentum to success. There are no magical or quick solutions, but earnest work yields results. Anything worth having is worth working to achieve. Whatever the dream, make sure it includes a great deal of doing!
At the end of the day, do not let the wish be greater than the work. It is time to move past panning phase and into the production phase. Let your will to succeed outweigh the lure of a wishful thought and do whatever it takes to transform the wish into work. Dream big, work harder!“You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water. Don’t let yourself indulge in vain wishes.” ~ Laurence J. Peter
Life truly begins the moment we step out of our comfort zones and are forced to explore the unknown. Skating through life on easy street, avoiding any and everything that appears complicated, and afraid to adventure into the unknown is a sure-fired way to live a stagnant life void of the euphoria of discovery.
It is a testament of faith and determination and there is no doubt that if things in life do not challenge you on a cerebral, physiological, psychological, and emotional level, there is no way growth can take place. Challenge may be the cause, but change is the effect to help you discover your inner depth. Life is meant to challenge you because with each challenge, a new layer is revealed and you will discover the prowess of your talents, a deeper desire to succeed, and uncanny ability to overcome life’s trials. With every challenge you will be forced to venture from what is comfortable to something that may be unfamiliar, but is uplifting.
Let go of the fear of the unknown. The moon was unknown until someone dared to send a man into space. Electricity was unknown until someone challenged contemporary thought and ignored the naysayers. The list goes on and on about all the wonders of life that would have never happened if someone did not decide to challenge the conventional in order to change the future. What is challenging you to make the change the change of your life and are you willing to walk in the unknown to chase your dreams?
Change is not a bad thing, especially when that change is the first step towards destiny. Never again let comfortability stifle your growth. If the caterpillar remained on the ground, comfortable to crawl around, afraid of change, how would it ever turn into the beautiful butterfly? When you remain in your comfort zone, you remain grounded, doomed to wallow the on the dirt. But when you accept change, dare to discover the unknown, this is when you sprout wings and gain the ability to fly high, cover new terrain, and see wonders never imagined. The comfort zone is the great enemy to creativity; moving beyond it necessitates intuition, which in turn configures new perspectives and conquers fears. ~ Dan Stevens
You should not remain in your comfort zone; if you want to make it big, you must challenge yourself, get out of your comfort zone, and succeed in doing well outside of your comfort areas. ~ Rohit Sharma
Be willing to step outside your comfort zone once in a while; take the risks in life that seem worth taking. The ride might not be as predictable if you’d just planted your feet and stayed put, but it will be a heck of a lot more interesting. ~ Edward Whitacre, Jr.
Who you see is who you will be. ~ BrotherWord
Vision without action is no more than a dream. Dreams are the beginning of aspirations, illuminating, invigorating, a oftentimes, inspiring. However, a dream that is not followed by work shall forever remain dormant. Dreams are important, but vision is vital. Think of your vision as your blueprint to your destiny and it all revolves around how you see yourself.
Vision is cast as we live in the moment. Sounds crazy, a bit off doesn’t it? How do I prepare for the future and thrive in the present at the same time? How am I supposed to plan for tomorrow if I am supposed to concentrate and focus on today. Think of it as a road trip. You know your destination, where you are trying to get to, but how to get there is the key. Like a map, so is your life. Devise a plan, anticipate roadblocks and traffic, navigate the roads, look both ways, stay alert, and pray for traveling grace. In order to reach your destination, you first have to get into your vehicle (live the dream); start the engine (become fired up about the possibilities); buckle up (the road may get rough and there will be setbacks along the way); make sure the tank is full (pour into your dream and surround yourself with a team that will pour into you as well); and finally, began to accelerate (get moving and start making strives toward accomplishing all you have set out to achieve). In no time, you will reach your destination.
The subconscious is the mirror to the soul and the eyes are its windows. How you see yourself, how you perceive your worth and purpose, will ultimately determine if you reach your destination. We already know that everyone may not align with, support, or last as we make our journey, but we can never forget who we are or why we are doing it. If your subconscious is the mirror, be willing to look within, search your soul for clarity, direction, and courage, and know without a shadow of a doubt that the only person who can steer the course of your life, is the one staring back at you in the mirror. Be willing to dig deep and pull out your best! Let your eyes be the windows to opportunity, open and inviting, and the barriers to block anything unwanted and undesired. But don’t be deceived either by what you see. Remember the grass is not always as green as it may appear and there are no shortcuts despite how enticing either may seem. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Remain faithful that your vision will come to fruition. Who you see is who you will be and when your vision aligns with your work ethic, the reflection will be a magnificent sight to behold.
If for any reason you doubt the next generation of talent, please take a moment to check out these young stars in action. They may not be household names yet, but trust, their impact is setting the world on fire as their videos continue to spread like wildfire. From Chloe and Halle’s cover of Beyonce’s Pretty Hurts, Charlize Glass’ killer dance moves, Suraji Britt’s operatic cello play, Aidan Fisher monstrous guitar solo, and the unknown drummer freestyling with buckets, these young & gifted phenoms are a shining example of what is on the horizon!
They give hope that the torch will not go dim and the keys to the kingdom are in good hands. It is inspiring and encouraging to watch them valiantly chase their dreams and not squander their talents. They deserve a standing ovation. Here’s to you!
Dreams are meant to challenge. to pique our deepest emotions and senses. to force us to look beyond all that we have ever imagined possible. It’s dreams that have built our world because people dared to reach for greater heights, take risks, and explore the unknown. Never give up on your dreams. It is never too late to pursue your passion. Many of us feel time has passed us by or our schedules have now become too busy. How false and misleading that can become and that fear only attempts to block our destiny. It’s when we face our fears and explore our passions that we finally reach that euphoria that comes with trying new, the alleged impossible. It’s equivalent to the butterflies you feel when you ask the pretty girl out, the thrill of closing on your house, the anticipation of opening a birthday present, the excitement of your first day at school or on the job, all rolled into one. Dreams are windows to the a future of endless possibilities. Chase your dream with vigor and let nothing dissuade you from achieving all your imagination can conjure up. Be the master of your destiny, the captain of your journey, and the creator of your fantasies. Let your aspirations be limited only by your thoughts. Dream the impossible, believe the improbable, achieve the incomparable!Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements. ~ Napoleon Hill Consult not your fears but your hopes and dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do. ~ Pope John XXIII
I am so THANKFUL for the power within, the power to reach deep and manifest the energy, the strength, and the courage to continue and to overcome. I am so THANKFUL for He that is in me that enables, encourages, and enlightens me to become all that I can possibly become and more than I ever imagined. We all possess this power, this innate trait. It’s literally in the palm of our hands, the recess of our minds, and the pits of our spirit. It’s simply a matter of bringing it to the forefront. It’s about not having to summon it only in times of need, but living in that place continually, always exhibiting the abilities that have been birthed in you. It’s about living the dream and not always chasing it and making the most of everyday, because you are truly THANKFUL for every part of your life. It’s a mindset and a purposeful walk, knowing who you are and all you are capable of. You are more powerful than you ever imagined and although you may not be able to leap tall buildings, run faster than a speeding bullet, or have x-ray vision, you are SUPER! Be THANKFUL for the gifts you do have and don’t be afraid to share them with the world.Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. ~ Harriet Tubman To dream anything that you want to dream. That’s the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do. That is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits. That is the courage to succeed. ~ Bernard Edmonds
